My Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is stuck in “downloading… do not turn off target”. I pressed volume up, power and menu all at same time and the Galaxy Note screen comes on but then returns to downloading screen… I tried removing the battery, and that did not help either. I’ve done all I can think of. Is it a goner? Anybody help!
Jul 01, 2012 Was updating my SGS when it got stuck on the screen where Android is digging in the dirt and says Downloading. Do no turn off target. Do I take the battery out to get it to shut down I am not too impressed with this phone already and now its possessed it should have had a dead battery.
model number is sph-l900. we are on Verizon towers but use page plus for carrier.
holding those buttons down makes the screen go to black then right back to the downloading screen. We are on Verizon network but use page plus for our service. I'm thinking about taking it to the store and asking them to reflash it for me - do you think that's the way to go?
well if it is hardware problem then they will tell you, if you need to flash with official ROM then perhaps it is better to talk with them if it is under warranty
Sorry I didn't mention this in the process for getting into recovery mode. The phone has to be completely turned off before pressing the volume up + power button + home button simultaneously.
You can take it into the store to have them factory reset your phone. If it doesn't work for them, they may be able to re-flash the phone for you.
what you did so that your Samsung stuck in download mode? As Dalsan suggest it can be software problem that can be cured by flashing or upgrade/update via samsung kies if updates exist.
Your phone may not be a goner (hard-bricked), but your data, pictures, music, contacts, messages, etc., may be unrecoverable if they are not backed up. It sounds like your phone is soft-bricked, which is fairly easy to fix.
You have three choices: install a rooted custom ROM (custom version of Android including Android 4.4.4, higher than the official updates), or reinstall the official version of Android for your model phone from Samsung using Kies software, or try to get into recovery mode and hard/factory reset your phone. I would try resetting the phone first. We would need to know the phone model and cell phone service provider (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.) before giving you more information on how to perform the other suggestions.
To enter recovery mode, press volume up + power button + home button simultaneously and keep them pressed until you see the recovery mode. Use the volume keys to navigate the menu and press the power button to select an option. Using the Volume Up or Down keys, scroll to Wipe data/Factory Reset. Select Yes, delete user data. After the the deletion process completes, back out to the main menu, scroll down to Wipe Cache Partition and select it. Back out to the main menu and select Reboot system now, and it should boot properly. Note: you will have to set the phone up again.

What is Download Mode (Odin Mode)?
Download mode, also called Odin mode, is a mode for Samsung devices to download and flash ROMs and kernels. After entering Download mode, your Galaxy phone will say 'Downloading... Do not turn off target.'
In earlier models such as Galaxy S3/S4/Note 4, the 'downloading' screen is black with a Android logo while in newer models like Galaxy S6/S7/S8/S8 Plus/S9 running on Mashmallow and above, the 'Downloading' screen is blue with a download icon.

How to Exit Download Mode
Normally, you can exit the Download mode by long pressing power button. However, sometimes, the Galaxy phone just doesn't boot up no matter how long you press the power button. It seems like that the Galaxy phone is stuck at Download mode. This often happens when the phone is soft-bricked after a bad update or corrupted firmware flashing. To get out of Download mode or odin mode on Galaxy phone or tablet, you can try these tricks.
1. Force restart Samsung
To exit download mode, you can hold down Volume Down + Power button and the phone will power off. If not, hold down the two buttons longer, for about 20 seconds.
If the phone is still in Download mode, try to press and hold all buttons (Power + Home + Volume Up + Volume Down) at the same time untill the phone reboots.
2. Battery pull
If the button combination is unable to get your phone out of odin mode, try to pull the battery out of the phone. But many users found that a battery pull is not helpful, especially for Galaxy Note 5/S6, Galaxy Note 8/S8 with unremovable battery/back cover.
3. Flash a firmware
Another way to get Samsung out of Download mode is by downloading a stock firmware with Odin.
Install Odin on a computer;
Download a suitable firmware for your Samsung device;

If you don't know how to flash a firmware, the following is an extremely simple way to exit Download mode for Samsung Galaxy Note/S devices.
Fix Samsung Stuck in 'Downloading...do not turn off target'
First, you need to download a tool named Broken Android Data Extraction on your Windows PC.
After connecting your Galaxy device to PC, the tool can detect that your device is stuck in Odin mode and get it out of Odin mode automatically. It is as simple as ABC.
